4 Tips for Keeping A Long Distance Relationship

Thursday, January 25, 2018

Happy Friday Eve!

As we entered 2018 there was a topic that I knew I wanted to talk about. It's hard to enter a new year knowing that your special someone can't be there in person. It's even harder when you're reminded a month later at Valentine's Day. Chandler and I were only together for six months before the Navy sent him completely across the country to California. Long distance is one of the hardest things to do, and it's even harder when you're significant other is in the military. The time difference alone made after work conversations sometimes non-existent.

Today I want to share a few helpful tips on keeping a long distance relationship.

1. Learn each other's schedules.

This is huge when there's a time difference. Even though our three hour time difference might not seem like much, it really is. Since he had to get up early to get to work I was able to talk to him in the morning on my way to work. However, we couldn't talk during the day really at all. Our biggest opportunity to talk was in the evening. There was many times when he would be getting off of work and I would be going to bed but we made it work.

Find your time to connect and take advantage of every second. Time is precious.

2. Find what type of communication works best for you.

We are so lucky in this day in age to have access to so many forms of technology. Phone calls, video chats, text messages, you name it! Sometimes I think about how people did long distance relationships before all that. Those are the couples that I would like to meet because they are strong.

I'm the kind of person that likes to video chat because it made me feel like we were actually together. Since Chandler didn't have an IPhone, we used an app called Tango and it worked out pretty well for us. The video is never going to be picture perfect with any app but it's still better than nothing!

3. Keep yourself busy.

This is SO important. If you don't keep yourself busy, you will always be thinking about them which will lead you to being really upset. Luckily, there are so many good ways to keep yourself busy. Join a club, try a new fitness class, adopt a pet, etc. While I was living in my first apartment, I wanted to have my kitties with me so bad but I couldn't afford the pet deposit. For Christmas, my parents actually paid for the pet deposit so that I could have my kitties.

Having my cats around really helped keep me preoccupied. Everyday I would be at the gym and then I would come home, play with my kitties and then we would snuggle and go to bed. I loved it! Staying busy really is key and you will be happier in the long run. Just make sure that whatever you choose is positive and constructive.

4. Ask yourself is this what you really want.

I don't want to seem like I'm trying to throw a wrench into this, but I do think it's important to ask yourself "Is this what I really want?" It's okay to feel discouraged at times, doubtful at times and of course sad. However, you have to know that it is worth every phone call and every visit in order to keep it going. It's not going to be easy, so don't think I'm suggesting that ending it is taking the easy way out. I'm not saying that at all.

I only bring this up because I was asked this question. Is it what I really want? Of course you all know the outcome because he's in these photos! However, long distance doesn't work out for everyone. At the end of the day, you have to do your absolute best to make it work for the time that you have to. If you have done all of that, then the outcome will be what it will be.

I hope these tips help you if you are currently in or about to enter a long distance realtionship. Like I said, it isn't going to be easy, however it can end pretty great. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me in the comments below or via social. I will always try to answer what I can and do my best to help.

January BarkBox

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Happy Tuesday!

Diesel has been loving his BarkBox subscription! I think he actually knows that he gets a gift every month because he's always so excited the second he sees the open box. The theme of this box was medieval times.

I would have to say that is always my favorite thing about BarkBox. They really do an awesome job at coming up with clever themes for us dog parents! As normal, this box included two toys, two bags of treats and one chew. I would like to point out that he ate the entire chew in one minute. 😂 He has done a good job at keeping his toys in decent care. We had to take the king away for a bit as he destroyed part of the cape within seconds of having it. Haha! Below are photos of the January box!

P.S. I'm sorry about the messy table in the back. I noticed this after the photos were taken and trust me it wasn't worth trying to get Diesel to pose again! My fellow dog parents know the struggle! 😂

Thanks for reading, have a great week! ☺️

Weekly Round Up

Friday, January 19, 2018

Happy Friday everyone!

This week definitely had it's moments of going by super fast and going by SUPER slow! Like yesterday, not only did I think it was Friday, when I thought it was after 4pm it was only 3! My internal clock was all messed up! Haha!

I am excited about this weekend because I have my next horseback riding lesson, an exciting surprise (stay tuned), and the jags play in the big championship game! Rumor has it that Tom Brady hurt his  hand. When I tried to confirm this with my cousin he said that he dislocated one of his fingers but the doctors won't comment on it. Of course he had to add that even an injured Tom Brady could still beat us. Remember when I said he was their biggest fan? 😂

All game talk aside, I'm excited to share this week's round up post! I will admit, I was writing this while hungry so there might be more food call outs than normal. More specifically, I was craving Mexican so of course I found this delicious looking cheese dip that makes you want to walk away from any healthy, nutritious meal you may have planned to eat #thestruggleisSOreal. 😂

First up, I'm not entirely sure how healthy these zucchini chips are but the have zucchini in the name so it counts as a healthy snack...right? I know I want to try this recipe from Damn Delicious. Get the recipe below!

You know when you're scrolling through Instagram and you see a food gram that is so mouth watering but so pretty you don't want to eat it but you do at the same time? Yeah that happened when I saw this smoothie from Half Baked Harvest. This smoothie has so many great ingredients in it to help fuel your body and it sounds delicious!

Okay, okay. The moment we've all been scrolling for! The cheese dip!!! I found this amazing recipe from The Girl Who Ate Everything. Which by the way, her name is the best thing I've ever heard! 😂

This last blogger is one that I'm definitely obsessed with! She loves color just as much as I do and her latest post is the perfect thing to brighten up your day! Goodtomicha

Body Positivity

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

"One small thought in the morning can change your whole day"

All throughout college I was a size six. I've always been a size six. It wasn't until I started dating Chandler (not blaming him at all) and all of the eating out + my first 9-5 job that I gained weight. My body was so used to always being active, that when things slowed down, it wasn't ready. I didn't change my eating habits because I didn't know I had to until it was too late. I didn't know I had poor form with some of my workout moves which led to a back injury that slowed down any progress I had made. I have been working hard for a while now to lose the weight and it didn't really start to happen until the second half of 2017.

Losing weight is a hard thing. Being comfortable in your own skin during that process is even harder. I wanted to talk about body positivity today because I felt it was very important that every woman know that they are beautiful and that it is okay to struggle with that thought at times. I can't tell you how many times Chandler has said "you're beautiful" and I didn't believe him. We all have those days. However, we need to work harder to combat those thoughts because ladies they are so not true.

The quote I shared at the beginning really does work. If you start your day with a positive thought, you can immediately put yourself in a happy mindset which will boost your mood for the whole day! I mean, how great is that! Pick one thing about yourself that you love and it doesn't have to be a body part, but it can be!

For instance, I love my hair. It's long, strong, thick, and the color is natural. It keeps my neck and shoulders warm in the colder months and it makes me feel beautiful when it's down in curls or straight. I love my hair.

What do you love about yourself?

I mentioned the Tone It Up Love Your Body Series the other day and I wanted to touch on it again in this post. This series is all about taking the time to really love all that your body does for you. Everyday that you wake up is because your body was like "yep, Caitlin, you're here and it's going to be another great day." Think about everything your body has been through. As I mentioned above, my body has been through an injury and here it is, still standing. People break bones and they heal. Your body got through that. You did your best round house kick in your kickboxing class the other night. Your body got through that!

Our bodies are such incredible machines that don't get enough credit. How we fuel them, love them and talk about them makes such a difference.

One important thing to note is every body is unique and special. One body type is not like the other and one person is not like the other. So why compare? When you compare yourself to someone who is at a different fitness level, skill level, or just anything, how does that help you? It only helps if it motivates you in a positive way. However, so often we compare ourselves in a negative way. We'll say "man, I wish I was a size zero" or "I wish I had a thigh gap." Screw the thigh gap! It's not a body requirement. If you have one great, if you don't who cares?

Every body was specially designed for each person. What your body looks like doesn't define who you are. What you do with it and your life is what matters. Who you are as a person is what matters. You can't do something with your life if you are constantly sitting upset, thinking about how great someone else's life is or how your life should be like theirs. That's not how it works!

P.S. You never know what the other person is going through. Things are never at all what they seem.

So today, I want all of you to think about what you love about yourself and it doesn't have to be one thing! I hope you have a list as long as Santa's! Haha! Thank your body for all it does for you, fuel it with what it needs to keep going, and most importantly, love everything about it.

I would love to hear what you love about yourself in the comments below and I want everyone who reads this today to tell a friend, family member, or complete stranger something they love (or like/notice if they're a stranger) about them. I promise, you'll make their day. :)

Winter Date Idea: Living Room Fort

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

Happy Tuesday!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and a not-so Monday Monday haha! I had my first official horseback riding lesson on Sunday and I had a wonderful time. :)

We also celebrated another JAGS WIN!!! Did anyone else see it? What a game at 45-42! I'm super excited for next week's game because we are playing my cousin's favorite team, the Patriots. Now, I haven't introduced my cousin in my blog yet, but let me tell you all something about him. He is the biggest Patriot's fan that has ever existed. No joke. We don't even watch football with him because of how into the game he gets. So, of course the second the game was over I picked up my phone and gave him a call and he was like "Yeah, I saw that game" and I responded with "ready to get your butt whooped?!" Definitely a little cousin rivalry going on and it's a ton of fun!

Now, I know I haven't shared a date idea in a while, so I wanted to catch up with something super fun. Growing up, one of my favorite things to do was to build a fort in the living room or honestly any room in the house! Haha! If you've heard of the phrase: "Everything but the kitchen sink," the same phrase kind of applies to fort building. You grab every pillow, sheet, blanket and furniture piece you have and throw it all together! There's no right or wrong to it.

In the first year that Chandler and I were together, we actually built a smaller fort in my apartment at the time's living room. I think we had pizza and I got some Green Apple Smirnoff drinks from Total Wine. Which by the way, go pretty well with pizza! Haha! This time around we went pretty old school with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, board games and some movies. As you'll see as you scroll down, Diesel had to join and experience his first living room fort. :)
